Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety is a normal part of our human experience. It is our body’s way of reacting to stress and alerting us to potential threats or dangers. However, for some people, anxiety reaches the level of a clinical disorder because their experience is persistent and overwhelming and affects their day-to-day functioning.
If you or someone you know is experiencing anxiety, becoming familiar with its signs and symptoms is the first step towards getting support.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder
t is characterised by excessive worry and anxiety for at least six months about various aspects of life, such as family, health, and work. These are associated with restlessness (or feeling on edge), fatigue, problems in concentration (or the mind going blank), irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance. These symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in different areas of functioning.
Panic Disorder
The signs and symptoms of this condition involve recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. In addition, at least one of the attacks has been followed by either persistent concern about additional panic attacks or significant maladaptive changes in behaviour. Associated physical symptoms of anxiety, including but not limited to palpitations, sweating, trembling sensations, chest pain, and nausea, are also present.
Social Anxiety Disorder
This disorder involves an intense fear or anxiety about social situations, such as having a conversation or being observed while drinking or eating, in which the individual may be scrutinised or negatively evaluated by others. Furthermore, the fear or anxiety exceeds the actual threat and causes distress or impairment in important areas of life.
Separation Anxiety Disorder
It is a mental illness characterised by inappropriate and excessive fear or anxiety about separation from those to whom the individual is attached. These include worry about losing major attachment figures, reluctance to go out because of fear of separation, or nightmares involving separation, to name a few. Additionally, fear, anxiety, and avoidance are persistent, lasting at least four weeks in children and adolescents and six months or more in adults.
Specific Phobia
It is a mental health condition that involves a marked fear or anxiety about a specific object or situation; examples could be flying, animals, heights, or receiving injections. Exposure to these phobic objects or situations almost always provokes immediate fear or anxiety. These signs and symptoms typically last for six months or more, causing significant distress or impairment in various areas of functioning.
How the Types of Anxiety Disorders are Treated in Sivana Rehab
Here at Sivana Rehab, we understand that living with anxiety can feel like being trapped in a vicious cycle of constant worries and fears. Hence, our team strives to provide compassionate care and comprehensive, evidence-based treatment to help you manage your symptoms and find long-term relief from these daily struggles.
Psychotherapy
Often, people who struggle with substance misuse do not realise the extent of their dependence, or they don’t know how to begin getting help. Many times, their loved ones come together to show them the extent of their addiction and compel them to seek treatment. An intervention is often the first step towards recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.
Psychoeducation: During the first few sessions of CBT, your therapist will discuss everything about your anxiety disorder, its symptoms, causes and risk factors, treatment options, and how CBT works. The goals and objectives of the treatment plan are also discussed.
Identifying Negative Thought: During the CBT sessions, your therapist will guide you to identify the negative thought patterns associated with your anxiety. This includes cognitive distortions such as catastrophising or thinking about the worst-case scenario, black-and-white thinking or over-generalisation, like drawing conclusions based on limited evidence.
Cognitive Restructuring: Once your irrational thoughts (cognitive distortions) are identified, the goal is to challenge them by asking if there is evidence to support them and modify and replace them with more rational thought patterns.
Behavioural Techniques: CBT integrates strategies to help you modify the behavioural patterns associated with your anxiety. Techniques such as exposure therapy, which involves gradually confronting feared objects or situations; behavioural activation, which involves increasing engagement in activities that provide a sense of accomplishment; and activity schedule, which involves creating a structured daily routine, are taught to improve the adaptive response to anxiety.
Medication
If psychotherapy alone is unsuccessful, medication may be prescribed to manage the anxiety symptoms and accelerate the treatment outcome. Typically, antidepressants such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are recommended as a first-line pharmacological treatment for anxiety due to their effectiveness and lower risk of side effects and dependence. This class of medication works by blocking the neurotransmitter serotonin reabsorption and increasing its level in the brain.
Holistic Therapy
The holistic therapy is what sets Sivana Rehab apart from other treatment centres. Our holistic therapy takes a multidimensional approach to addressing the symptoms of people with anxiety disorders. We integrate various modalities and lifestyle practices into treating anxiety symptoms and improving the overall quality of life, such as mindfulness, relaxation, and meditation-based activities.
